ADAS calibration technician: what the job is and what shops look for
ADAS calibration technicians make sure a vehicle's driver-assistance cameras and sensors see the road correctly after glass or other work disturbs them. In an auto glass shop, that most often means recalibrating the windshield-mounted camera after a replacement.
What ADAS is
Advanced driver assistance systems detect hazards and then alert the driver or take limited automatic action, using radar, lidar, camera, and other sensors.[2] NHTSA describes common examples: forward collision warning, which alerts the driver but does not brake; lane departure warning, which uses a camera to detect drifting and only warns the driver; and automatic emergency braking, which applies the brakes when a forward crash is imminent.[1]
Why a glass shop does calibration
The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) says that when a windshield is replaced, the components on the windshield that interact with the vehicle's ADAS must be recalibrated so that, for example, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning work correctly.[3] AGSC also says that vehicles cannot recalibrate themselves once a sensor is disturbed, and that diagnostic and calibration equipment is the only way to complete a successful calibration.[3]
BLS expects more demand for body and glass repairers partly because repair work takes more time to work around an increasing number of cameras and sensors.[8]
What the job involves
AGSC's Glass Calibration Specialist exam outline is the clearest public description of the skills.[5] It covers:
- knowing the ADAS technologies in a vehicle, including forward-facing cameras, radar, lidar, and sensors;
- identifying when recalibration is required before glass replacement, repair, or other service;
- following OE and aftermarket calibration procedures and manufacturer specifications;
- static and dynamic calibration methods and the equipment each needs;
- running pre- and post-calibration scans, interpreting diagnostic trouble codes, and documenting results;
- setting up and keeping a safe work environment during calibration;
- explaining to customers why calibration is necessary.
Static and dynamic calibration
Static calibration uses targets and diagnostic equipment, while dynamic calibration uses a road drive; AGSC says OEMs are steadily moving ADAS calibrations to static or to static plus dynamic.[3] Conditions matter: AGSC lists existing diagnostic trouble codes, vehicle modifications, tire size and pressure, load, an unlevel surface, lighting, and weather as things that can prevent a successful calibration.[3]
Verification is part of the job
AGSC cautions that a scan tool reporting "calibration complete" only means the camera recognized a target, not that the result is accurate, and says a test drive of the ADAS functions must be performed to confirm.[3]
What shops look for
- Credentials. The AGSC Glass Calibration Specialist certification is a 70-question online exam. It costs $69 for technicians at AGSC member companies and $179 for others, includes up to three attempts, and the certification lasts 3 years.[4] The first person certified was announced at Auto Glass Week 2025, and around 115 people sat the training and exam at that event.[6]
- Training. I-CAR lists ADAS courses from a 30-minute online course on windshields and ADAS to a 24-hour hands-on Static ADAS Calibration course over three days, plus an hour-long online course on diagnosing failed calibrations and one on locating OEM calibration procedures.[7]
- Procedure discipline. The exam outline above shows the habits AGSC expects: follow OEM procedures, scan before and after, and document the result.[5]
- Glass fundamentals. Calibration follows a correct installation. BLS lists detail orientation and customer-service skills among the important qualities for these workers.[8] Basic glass installation can be learned in as little as 6 months.[8]
- Equipment familiarity. Calibration needs scan tools and calibration kits, and I-CAR, for example, offers vendor-specific online courses for the Autel and Bosch diagnostic and calibration kits.[7] Check each posting for the equipment a shop uses.
Pay
BLS does not publish a separate occupation for ADAS calibration, so there is no federal wage figure for it. The nearest category, automotive glass installers and repairers, had a median of $47,630 a year in May 2025; see how much auto glass technicians make. As one data point, Calibright's ADAS technician posting in Mundelein, IL listed $25 to $35 an hour when we checked in October 2026.[9] One posting is not an average.
